THE WHITEOUT SERIES PROGRAM OUTLINE
- Program One: BACK TO BASICS
Program one in the Whiteout Series jump starts
with powder skiing after a three meter powder blizzard in the treed
chutes of Whistler. Viewers are introduced to the basics of powder
skiing, snowboarding and telemarking. We examine the basic body
stance, straight running, the traverse and side slip. Cat snowboarding
at Island Lake Lodge and telemarking with Leslie Clement, Canada's
#1 racer provide the action and adventure.
- Program Two: THE TURN
Program two in the Whiteout Series deals with
the most important skill to learn in skiing, snowboarding and telemarking...the
turn. Turning controls speed and direction allowing you to go where
you want as fast as you want. The basic turn is introduced after
skiing with the world's best at Mike Wiegle's Powder 8s contest.
We then trek to Flute Mountain, about an hours hike backcountry
from Whistler's peak, to find untracked powder, perfect weather
and great terrain to practice our turns.
- Program Three: THE BACKCOUNTRY
Program three in the Whiteout Series takes
us backcountry from the Spearhead Glacier behind Blackcomb to the
Yukon Territories. Doug Coombs, "the best skier in the world"...Outside
Magazine, takes us on a camping trip and shares tips on backcountry
and extreme skiing. Pat and Baiba Morrow travel to the Yukon on
an expedition to Mt. Logan and a group of backcountry lovers discover
snowmobiling is another way to reach the powder bowls of B.C.
- Program Four: POWDER
Why is untracked powder the ultimate descent experience?
Program four in the Whiteout Series captures the sensation of soaring,
gliding and floating; descent through is described as a dream-like
phenomenon that evokes a euphoric feeling. Skiing at Island Lake
Lodge, snowboarding in Alaska and telemarking in the European Alps
prove the lure of powder is universal.
- Program Five: EXTREME
Program five in the Whiteout Series deals with
extreme descents. As one skier put it, "extreme is a state
of mind, the individual has to decide what is their extreme."
Personnel techniques and challenges are portrayed while skiing the
Chugach Mountains in Alaska, snowboarding Tantalus in B.C. and telemarking
with Fred LaMott a member of Canada's National Team.
- Program Six: EXTREME II
It's air time in program six of the Whiteout Series.
North America's air specialists take us on this flight. Trevor Petersen
skiis Blackcomb mixing powder and the steeps with air time, Jay
Liska and Shawn Farmer ride in the Alaskan Extremes, we descend
on Fernie B.C. for a tour and Kevin Dyck take the biggest jump of
all... sky surfing the clouds.
- Program Seven: A FLASH BACK
Program seven in the Whiteout Series takes
a look back to the roots of snowboarding, the traditions of telemarking
and the skiing McConkey family of Whistler B.C. Surfing, skateboarding
and Tom Sims, one of the original inventors of the snowboard, describe
the evolution of snowboarding. Jim McConkey and son Shane, ski and
chat about skiing today and how it was 30 years ago. For over 150
years, telemarking has evolved as the premiere sport of Norway.
We look back as they celebrate their heritage in traditional style
at the World Championships in Italy.
- Program Eight: THE PROFESSIONALS
Program seven in the Whiteout Series looks
at the professional racer and some of their techniques. We talk
to World Cup ski racers and find out they secretly would rather
be skiing powder. We look at snowboard racing with Christian Hrab
who analyzes techniques using computer animation and travel with
the Canadian National Telemark Team to the World Championships in
Italy
